Owain mab Urien, Royalty: The son of Urien, king of Rheged c. 590, he fought with his father against the Angles of Bernicia. The historical figure of Owain became incorporated into the Arthurian cycle of legends where he is also known as Ywain, Yvain, Ewain or Uwain.
Owain Gwynedd, Royalty: Also known by the patronymic "Owain ap Gruffydd". He is occasionally referred to as Owain I of Gwynedd, or Owain I of Wales on account of his claim to be King of Wales. He is considered to be the most successful of all the north Welsh princes prior to his grandson, Llywelyn the Great. He was a member of the House of Aberffraw, a descendant of the senior branch from Rhodri Mawr.
Owain ap Gruffydd, Royalty: Prince of the southern part of Powys and a poet. He is usually known as Owain Cyfeiliog to distinguish him from other rulers named Owain, particularly his contemporary, Owain ap Gruffydd of Gwynedd known as Owain Gwynedd.
Owain Goch ap Gruffydd, Royalty: Also known as Owain ap Gruffudd, Owain Goch, and Owain the Red. He was the brother of Llywelyn the Last and Dafydd ap Gruffudd and, for a brief period in the late 1240s and early 1250s, ruler of part of the Kingdom of Gwynedd (in modern-day north Wales).
Owain Owain, Writer, Poet: Welsh novelist, short story writer, poet. He founded Tafod y Ddraig (The Dragon's Tongue) which became the Welsh Language Society's main voice from its birth in the 1960s to the present day. He was a member of Mensa, and created new protests for the The Welsh Language Society as the secretary of the first branch, at Bangor.
Owain Lawgoch, Royalty: Sometimes referred to as "Owain of the Red Hand" or "Yvain de Galles". His full name is Owain ap Thomas ap Rhodri and he was a Welsh soldier who served in Spain, France, Alsace and Switzerland. He led a Free Company fighting for the French against the English in the Hundred Years' War. As the last politically active descendant of Llywelyn the Great in the male line, he was a claimant to the title of Prince of Gwynedd and of Wales.
Owain Ddantgwyn, Royalty: Is the popularly recognised form of the name of a prince of North Wales, probably a King of Rhos in the late 5th century. Next to nothing is known of him, yet in recent years he has become widely accepted in some quarters as a possible candidate for a so-called 'real' King Arthur.
Owain Yeoman, Actor: Welsh actor whose credits include The Nine, Kitchen Confidential, Generation Kill, and The Mentalist.
