Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, African-American: Sadie was the first African American woman to receive a Ph.D. in the United States, the first woman to receive a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and was the first national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.\n\nShe worked for the black-owned North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company in Durham, North Carolina for two years. Later, she joined her husband's law practice, specializing in estate and family law. She was appointed Assistant City Solicitor for the City of Philadelphia and held that position from 1928 to 1930 and from 1934 to 1938.\n\nAlexander was the first national president of Delta Sigma Theta, serving from 1919 to 1923. During her five years as grand president, much of the structure and procedure of the organization was put into place. May Week was created in 1921, and continues to be an integral part of Delta Sigma Theta tradition. She served on many boards, committees, and commissions and held office in many local and national organizations including: President Harry Truman's Committee on Human Rights in 1947 and on the Commission on Human Relations of the City of Philadelphia from 1952 until 1968. She worked in her husband's law firm from 1927 until 1959, when he was appointed to the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia. She practiced law on her own until 1976, when she joined the firm of Atkinson, Myers, and Archie as a general counsel. She retired in 1982, was ill with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases for several years, and died in 1989. She is buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery.\n\nAn elementary school in West Philadelphia, the Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander University of Pennsylvania Partnership School, is named after her; it is a public school that was developed in partnership with the University, which supports the school financially and academically.
Sadie Peterson Delaney, Chief Librarian: The chief librarian of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama, for 34 years. She is well known as a pioneer for her work with bibliotherapy.\n\nStudents from University of Illinois, University of North Carolina and Atlanta University were sent to observe and learn from Delaney at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Librarians from Europe, South Africa and around the United States also came to observe Delaney and her use of bibliotherapy. Her library was used as a model for other Veterans Administration hospitals. She was invited to give speeches at American universities, community churches and a conference in Rome in 1934.\n\nIn 1948, she was named Woman of the Year by the Iota Phi Lambda sorority. She received the same honor again in 1949 by the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, and then in 1950 by the National Urban League. Also in 1950, an honorary doctorate was bestowed upon her by Atlanta University. She was honored with a testimonial banquet at the 1950 American Library Association convention, and the US Veterans Administration awarded her their top award for excellence in 1956.
