Top Ten Baby Names

Using BabyBuilder to Search the Top Ten Baby Names

To begin your search of the top baby names, visit eMedTV's BabyBuilderTM name creation tool. BabyBuilder lists the top ten baby names for both genders by year -- all the way back to 1880. This innovative Web site also provides each name's meaning, origin, and variations.

By clicking this BabyBuilder link and following these instructions, you'll be on your way to finding the perfect name for your baby!

1. On the BabyBuilder home page, click Top 10. This brings up the top ten names for the most recent year available.

2. Use the drop-down arrows to scroll through the Year tab on the left side of the screen. When you click the desired year, a list of the top ten baby names for that year will instantly appear.

Note: BabyBuilder automatically searches for names in the United States, but you can also view names from several other countries.

3. As you review the different names that catch your eye, be sure to click each name to learn its origin, meaning, and variations.

You may find it interesting to see how certain names have cycled through popularity over the years. You might even want to see how popular your name was the year you were born.

Avoiding the Top Ten Baby Names

If you'd like your baby to have a unique name all his or her own, you'll find BabyBuilder's list of top 100 baby names to be a valuable tool. If the name you're considering doesn't appear on the top 100 for the past five years or so, it most likely won't be one of the top ten baby names for the current year. This is because names usually work their way up (and down) in popularity over several years. Most baby names don't just suddenly appear in the top ten.

Also, keep in mind the trends that baby names usually follow. For example, in some years, names that rhyme (such as Cayden, Jayden, and Aidan) are among the most popular. In other years, names that have a similar ending (like Kaylee, Hayley, and Ashley) are at the top of the list. So while some names may remain popular for ten years or more, others that were popular a few years ago may not be all that common today.

Most importantly, don't be afraid to use a name you really like -- even if it is one of the top ten baby names. While it may be popular and other children may have the same name, your little one will grow to be a unique person, regardless of his or her name.
