eMedTV's Uncommon Names
Another way to find an uncommon baby name is to look at eMedTV's list of uncommon names. This list can be found through eMedTV's Baby Names channel or by clicking this BabyBuilder link. Once you've reached the BabyBuilder Web page, click the Uncommon Baby Names link near the upper-right corner of the screen. This link will call up a list of hundreds of uncommon names!
Top 100 Baby Names
BabyBuilder also provides lists of the top ten baby names and the top 100 baby names for each year. These lists can provide several ideas for uncommon names. For example, in the early 1900s the name Nellie was #41 in popularity. But today, that name isn't even on the popularity charts. Searching these archives can help you find names that were popular many years ago but are uncommon today.
As you research baby names that are uncommon, be sure to consider the following:
  • Does the name sound old-fashioned? (This can be a pro or a con, depending on your personal preference.)
  • Are there people in history with this name that you do not want your child "linked" to?
  • Will your child be teased about his or her name? (Ask some school-age children what they think of the name -- their responses will be a good indicator.)

Final Thoughts

Remember that over the years, it's relatively common for a baby name to be quite popular, then become uncommon for several years, and then become popular once again. So, if a certain name is uncommon for your child's generation, it doesn't mean it will remain uncommon throughout his or her lifetime. Regardless of whether your child's name is very popular or uncommon and unique, he or she will still be a unique individual.
Have fun as your explore the BabyBuilder site and set out to discover your baby's name!
